Gelsenkirchen-Schalke beyond football. Station of a city district documentary

If someone in Frankfurt, Munich or Wolfsburg reads something about “Schalke” in a newspaper article, the name Sandra Altmann will certainly not appear in it. This is probably because she doesn’t wear a blue and white jersey with a back number in her everyday work. And yet the charismatic social worker is closely connected with Schalke, not with the club (or maybe that), but with the district definitely. On Thursday, for my photo documentary “Out of the Blue – Schalke away from football”, I was at Haus Eintracht in Grillostraße with the Amigoians, where Sandra, as head of the facility, ensures that children and young people from the Schalke district (and beyond) have a daily place to go where they can play or learn. Mostly both.

As part of the photo project “Gelsenkirchen abseits des Fussballs” (Gelsenkirchen away from football), which originally focussed on the Schalke district, a series of cross-district photographs was also taken, which will be compiled and published in an illustrated book entitled “Gelsenkirchen away from football”.
