Mural in Berlin-Kreuzberg
In the summer of 2012, residents around Kottbusser Tor in Berlin-Kreuzberg protested against rising rents and the resulting displacement. With banners and slogans such as “Higher wages, lower rents,” they drew attention to their situation. This message was also artistically captured in a large mural by the Berlin-based activist group Interbrigadas on a residential building on Skalitzer Straße.
Interbrigadas, a Berlin-based association founded in 2007, is committed to international exchange and solidarity with social movements in Latin America. Inspired by the historical International Brigades, they combine political education with practical support—through solidarity trips to South America as well as cultural and political projects in Berlin. These include events, film series, and artistic actions in public spaces.
As part of the Kreuzberg rent protests, the group was not only involved in organizational support but also documented the resistance through visual means. Their work reflects a clear stance against gentrification and in favor of social inclusion. With projects such as the large-scale mural “Uprising of Colors” and the development of the “Interbüro” in Berlin’s Wedding district, Interbrigadas aims to establish long-term structures for political exchange and civic engagement.
